Work Options: The Ability to Choose
|
It is crucial and imperative that people with traumatic brain injuries have the opportunity once again to make decisions regarding their lives. At Cassell & Associates, we strongly believe in empowering each client with choice, offering a variety of work options that satisfies this important human need while assisting in the further development of dignity and self-worth.
Each client receives a paycheck and is paid hourly, not at piece rate. We believe that each client, in exchange for his or her productive job accomplishments, should have the benefit of a viable paycheck ... real work for real pay!
Work options include both repetitive and creative tasks. Repetitive tasks, which provide a much needed structure for success for many of our clients, include jobs such as computer data entry, preparing and packaging items, and collating and stuffing materials. Other clients are happier with more creative job assignments in woodworking and refinishing, creating artwork (sold in our gift shop) and newsletter writing.
The job coach-to-client ratio typically is one-to-three at our present location. This ratio enables clients to receive the structure and supervision needed and allows for cost containment for the insurer/payer. Clients gain some of the same benefits associated with a competitive employment setting: the opportunity to perform satisfying paid work, socialization with coworkers, and the self-esteem one derives from being a productive member of the work force, yet in a structured, success-oriented, therapeutic environment.
