Our Philosophy: Purposeful Activity
Leads to Dignity, Self-Worth, and Joy

In almost every case there comes a point in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation where one asks, “What now and where do we go from here?”

Creative, non-traditional vocational alternatives need to be available.  Helping those with injuries experience life in a more purposeful, positive, and successful way often helps them gain a greater sense of what each of us values most in life: dignity, self-worth, and joy.

We know that without appropriate structure, supervision, and purposeful activity, those with injuries often suffer from negative emotions that include anxiety, depression, anger, and rage. Unstructured and unproductive time at home, often spent watching hours of television, leads to greater feelings of boredom, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

What we have consistently found is that anti-social behaviors and feelings of isolation, frustration, and withdrawal - which often result in angry outbursts - decrease once those with brain injuries rediscover a sense of purpose and accomplishment in their lives.

While a sheltered work setting is not for everyone, it needs to be made available for those who are either unable or not yet ready to be competitively employed as well as for those who need structured, therapeutic day treatment. By taking into account the individual needs of each of our clients, we can then offer, within a functional and therapeutic environment, a creative and structured path after other rehabilitation therapies (occupational, physical, and speech) have ended.

Under the supervision and guidance of job coaches, occupational therapists, social workers, vocational evaluators, and exercise physiologists, we provide functional practice of ambulation, cognition, self-care, and time management skills. Through positive staff role modeling and peer feedback, we help our clients relearn much-needed socialization skills. What we offer also provides the necessary respite time for care-giving families.
